Company-wide Perspective
Leaders think like owners and act in the best interest of the entire company. We understand and consider upstream and downstream implications. We bring attention to problems within or outside of our department. We never say 'get out of my kitchen' or 'that's not my job.'
Back to the universal principles
Calibration
Under, just right, over.
| Situation | Under | Just Right | Over |
|---|---|---|---|
| A problem outside your department | Says it is not your job and walks past it. | Raises it to the people who own it, with what you have seen, and stays available for the part you can actually do. | Takes over the other department's problem and leaves your own undone. |
| A local win that hurts the next team | Takes the local win and lets the next team discover the cost. | Shows the downstream cost and picks the option that is better for the whole company, even if your number looks worse. | Blocks every local improvement in the name of a global view you have not checked. |
| Upstream of you | Absorbs the upstream mess and complains later. | Goes upstream with the specific defect and the effect on your customers, and agrees a change. | Dictates the upstream team's priorities as if their whole job were your input. |
| Not my job | Uses the phrase, or the polite version of it, and the customer waits. | Does the next useful step or finds the person who will, and does not leave the problem in the gap. | Collects other people's jobs until you are the bottleneck you meant to avoid. |
| Optimizing your own score | Chooses the metric that makes your team look best this month. | Chooses the metric the company would pick if it could see what you see. | Ignores your own commitments and calls every local goal selfish. |
| Get out of my kitchen | Turns another team away from a problem that crosses the boundary. | Lets them in for the part that affects them, and keeps a clear owner for the decision. | Invites every team into every decision so the kitchen has no cook. |
